"Fazirah's Fragile Steps: A 3-Year-Old's Battle Without Legs in a World of Hardship"

Help for Fazirah

In a sun-baked village in Africa, 3-year-old Fazirah crawls across dusty ground, her tattered dress dragging behind her. Born without legs, she has never taken a step—but her bigger struggle is surviving in a community where disability equals invisibility. "She was born like a flower without stems," her mother says, tracing the smooth stumps below Fazirah’s knees. "But in our world, a child who can’t walk is a child forgotten."

Fazirah spends her days in a cramped hut, watching through a window as neighbors’ children run to the well.Mother carries her daughter on her back to collect water, but the 2-kilometer trek leaves them both exhausted. "I tried making her a cart from wood," mother says, holding up a splintered board, "but it broke on the first use." The nearest clinic that could provide prosthetics is 100 kilometers away, requiring a bus fare they can’t afford—and even then, the cheapest prosthetic legs cost $300—more than Halima earns in a year selling firewood.

The Reality They Face

While disabilities like Fazirah’s may be statistically less common in Africa, the continent’s 1.4 billion population means millions of children like her face neglect, stigma, and lack of access to care. In a region where 90% of children with disabilities don’t attend school and only 2% have access to assistive devices, each case is a battle against systemic indifference.

Sub-Saharan Africa has just 1 prosthetist for every 10 million people, leaving children like Fazirah without essential mobility aids. In Somalia, less than 1% of hospitals offer pediatric orthopedic care.

85% of families in rural areas believe disabilities are caused by curses or ancestral spirits, leading to 60% of disabled children being hidden at home or denied education.
